Consumer spending dropped by 29 per cent year-over-year, as February 2020 proved to be an uneventful month in the latest NPD sales report for the United States. According to analyst Mat Piscatella, “late cycle hardware dynamics for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well as a lighter new release software slate drove the variance”.
It means that the software chart was dominated by older games, with not a single new release making the grade. Dreams charted in the PS4 specific sales charts, but it couldn't make the multiformat Top 20, despite being critically acclaimed. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare secured the top spot, with NBA 2K20 coming in just behind.

"Consumer Spending Dips in Uneventful Month"
Well this month has been anything but uneventful.
I can't decide if spending will go down next month b/c of all the self quarantines or up b/c of the run on toilet paper and hand sanitizer?
I do think COVID-19 may be the tipping point for digital sales and the end of stores like Gamestop and Game. Reggie ain't saving it.
AC was gonna me mostly downloads anyway - I pre-orded a cart from Best Buy b/c I like the idea of being able to trade it in if I can't stand those voices - but Doom will be interesting beyond all the collectors editions sales.
Yeah, I know, we were going all digital anyway eventually, just wondering if this will hasten it.
All COVID-19 conversations apart, which major release did we have in February? Nothing right? I believe sales will rise in March and April.
People are too busy buying paper towels
February was a pretty quiet month for new releases, but things are about to get busy - over the next 3-4 months leading into summer I've got the following to look forward to: Persona 5 Royal, FFVII Remake, Trials of Mana, Disaster Report (if it's any good), Sakura Wars, Last of Us II, Fairy Tail & Ghosts of Tsushima.
Let's hope I get a pay rise next month !!
Man Dreams must have flopped.
@koaeinferno
On the contrary I think more likely it's a game that will still be selling new copies a few years from now.
The content will just keep coming more and more a bit like mine craft.
I've seen that some countries have closed all stores except food places and chemists in an effort to stop covid 19 this could be devastating for small businesses and even some larger chains unless they get some support.
We ain't seen nothing like this since world war 2 and things will definitely be different after all this is over. 2020 will go down as one of the worst in history!
Last games I bought was November 2019! With only CyberPunk 2077 being a must have for 2020. I have purchased 12-20 games each year from launch of the PS4.
@JohnKarnes Really i have so many titels i want 2 firstparty ones that are above Cyberpunk. The New Tales game, Final Fantasy 7, Sakura Wars, Persona 5 Royal. 😆
@Flaming_Kaiser I will pick up a few on Black Friday this year or cave in and buy a few through the year. Because its a launch year I plan is to work on my back log. I have games still in their wrapper unopened.
@JohnKarnes I know what you mean i dont even know where too start. 😥
